The first year (74) MXR Phasers are awesome. Even the earliest of the 2nd batch that had the same circuit sounded like crap: noisier and more metallic than natural. I had a 90 and a 45 and stuck with the 90 because the 45 was a bit scooped in the midrange, so it sounded a bit quiet and either dark at the bottom of the sweep or bright at the top.

My fave modulation!

Any advice on how to tell what year it's from?

I know it doesn't sound like crap!

Oh man, I learned all about it when I was picking one out - I had several of them.

I know you can look at the date codes on the pots, often on components (particularly capacitors), and if I remember correctly, the circuit board itself changed slightly.

The "28 Resistor" is a telltale sign that it is NOT an original. Same with an LED or power input, but those were even later additions. Lemme look and see if I can the info I had on it.

EDIT: This guy, Stinkfoot, helped a lot identifying/dating my Phasers: http://stinkfoot.se/archives/tag/phase90

It is a 1974! BUD box

this site was helpful

So one of the original 1974 versions? Nice - those are the ones I was talking about. Just like that article says, even the earliest of the second wave of pedals didn't sound nearly as good. These are definitely worth the going rate.

Speaking if which - I got a solid core door put on the guitar room - so when things settle down the next few weeks - you'll have to call up the drummer, round up a bassist and we jam!

picture_of_nectar

you mean when things settle down in a couple years!?!?!?! ;)

I'd love to jam, haven't played with anyone in a while.
