Title: 'Doc on the way
Post by: picture_of_nectar on July 29, 2010, 11:21:51 AM
Hey S_D phriends...

Thought I'd share with you pics Paul just sent me. It is a Curly Maple Top with Black Walnut back and Maple Binding. Hasn't been painted yet but I am thinking a Iced Tea Sunburst finish...

Whoa...the REEEEEL deal.  Noice work.  Curious why you sprung for this and not the flagship model?  Either way, very cool.

I'm guessing he went with this model to save $2500.. Looks nice. I'm curious as to why Paul changed his headstock shape for the G4

Partly to save some coin, but mostly to have something a bit different.  I could have sold some other guitars to cover the difference. Paul says this one is a bit easier to play at high volume, so that's a plus for me too since I'm no Trey...

Funny though I did notice most of the Guitars in this batch are G2s.

Wow, end of August.  That's soon!  Can't wait to hear your thoughts on every aspect of the guitar, once you get your hands on it.  Also, I'm curious to know exactly when you requested to be put on the waiting list.  I'd like to have some idea when my turn might roll around.

Yeah, he started the build back in February I think. He spent like 3 months on the necks alone.

I had been emailing Paul to be on the list for almost two years when all of a sudden I got a reply saying, "sorry I missed these, gunna fit you in the current batch."

so I was like phuck yeah!

I think he's currently booked two batches out, but I'm not sure.

I am thinking Iced Tea burst (like Gibson's) or solid Amber for the color.

I want this one...the wood (unless I can get a spruce top), color, everything, exactly like this:

Also got to see the 3D ultrasound of my baby daughter today. Double whammy! What a great day!

Not a lot of case candy. Paul turf a couple notes, one is a warrenty, one is a diagram oh the controls. There is a special truss tool for his custom double truss rod.

Nectar, can you tell what shape the neck of the Doc has...ie...soft V, V, C (standard fender), U, fat gibson, standard gibson (thin/wide) etc.... Does he make all the necks the same or does the buyer have a preference as to the shape? I always wondered what the neck shape's were on the docs.

Also what does the switching sound sound like? does it really make a big difference in sound based on how its wired. ie... coil drop switch, and series/parallel switch? Just wondering if it sounds familiar or maybe there is something slightly different.
Title: Re: 'Doc on the way
Post by: picture_of_nectar on October 01, 2010, 11:09:38 AM
Feels pretty much like a Fender Medium C shape to me. I own a G+L with that carve and it's nearly identical. I think he carves necks one way, but I didn't ask. I figured I'd like what he gave me. I play on like 4-5 different shaped necks so Im use to adapting.

There are 8 pick up combinations. The three way switch...and you can coil drop each of those. Then the serries switch bypasses the 3way switch and that can also be coil dropped, which is a cool kinda stratty tone. I'm not very good at describing tones, it covers a lot of ground.

I usually don't like Bridge pickups much cause often I find them thin and nasaly...which just doesn't sound musical to my ears, not this one...it's equaly as sweet as the neck.

picture, you should order yourself the Lee Jackson Metaltronix guitar setup dvd series. That guitar is epic, but will need constant maintenance, more so than any other guitar you have ever played. Id get a whole Stew Mac guitar setup bench for her... Every time the seasons change, you'll probably want to be carefully tweaking the neck, to keep her in the sweet spot. Also if you can, get an armitage case to maintain decent humidity controlled storage. Should help you out in the long run with all of your guitars, and protect you main investment immediately.

Thanks for the advice poster! I will look that stuff up, appreciate it. I am lucky to have a high end tech right in my neighborhood whom I trust to make any adjustments. I also have a humidified guitar room that is below grade so it maintains a pretty consistant temperature...sort of my "man cave" so to speak, allthough my daughters will be rapidly encroaching on it. I have considered having a humidity controlled glass wall display case built.

For anybody interested I have posted some more impressions over at thegearpage.net Small Luthier forum in the Languedoc Guitars thread.

Title: Re: 'Doc on the way
Post by: picture_of_nectar on October 07, 2010, 11:22:05 AM
Yeah Andrew, the only thing I know about the truss so far is that it takes a special tool to adjust it. Hopefully the neck will be true for a while...
Title: Re: 'Doc on the way
Post by: aoguitars on October 07, 2010, 03:07:30 PM
I imagine it would be...but since it went across the country, you never know. But minor adjustments here and there are always expected.

I don't really know what's special about the truss rod. There aren't really that many ways to drastically change the design of a truss rod, since it's a pretty basic mechanical idea, which is why I asked PON about it. What kind of special tool is it that's needed to adjust it?
Title: Re: 'Doc on the way
Post by: picture_of_nectar on October 07, 2010, 06:01:24 PM
All I know is it is a dual action truss rod. It has a 1/4' wrench for adjustment.

Paul ships his guitars overnight across the country.
Title: Re: 'Doc on the way
Post by: aoguitars on October 08, 2010, 09:06:58 AM
Gotcha, thanks. That's nothing too out of the ordinary, so it must be his design of the rods or the way he anchors it into the heel end of the neck that make it a proprietary thing. He's a wicked smart dude, so I'm sure it's something cool.

And I was referring more to the climate differences coast-to-coast, which could result in needing a tweak or two once it leaves a climate-controlled shop. But again, I'm sure it's solid as a rock. Enjoy!
Title: Re: 'Doc on the way
Post by: Happyorange27 on October 08, 2010, 09:43:25 AM
I'm no guru here but my Wolfgang has a dual truss rod and after 11 years, it's still set up the same, haven't adjusted it.  My intonation and action is right on.  Now i'm sure if it was inspected, it may be a little off technically, but I haven't noticed any differences.  AO do you do any dual rods?
Title: Re: 'Doc on the way
Post by: aoguitars on October 08, 2010, 12:13:41 PM
Absolutely. All of my guitars have dual-action trussrods. There's no reason not to use them, in my opinion. Some guys like the straight (technically bent), one-piece, traditional "Gibson" style rod, but if that neck ever backbows on you, you're in some trouble and potentially looking at a massive repair. Back at Spector Basses, we were using one-way rods...and if a neck backbowed, we had to pull the rod out and flip it over. Which was not a fun project on a finished, $4000-$5000 bass.

I think in most cases, if the neck is built well, you'll never have an issue...unless extreme drying or moisture becomes a factor (which is why we don't leave guitars on a stand next to a woodstove over the winter, for example), or if the guitar was built in a really humid environment and sent to a dry one, etc. The dual-action rod just allows you to adjust in both directions, so matter what the neck wants to do once it's under string tension and the wood gets used to the idea of being a guitar in a climate, you're hopefully covered with a little tweakage. In Paul's case, he actually states that he has a proprietary design to rid the neck of dead spots...and knowing that he's a crazy smart guy, I'm sure he came up with something killer that works for him and his guitars. I was just curious as to how he expanded on the idea of the dual rod and if it was drastically different than anything else out there, and if PON knew about that on his new axe.

And, to note, this is a Dual "Action" rod I'm talking about, meaning it adjusts both ways. Not to be confused with a Dual--or Double--Truss Rod, formally used by Mike Tobias and others, which was actually two separate rods side-by-side with their own adjustment nuts. The idea there being that you could straighten out a twisted neck by tightening/loosening one side more than the other. You don't see these very often anymore.

There's your truss rod lesson for the day, kiddos :) Probably more than anyone really cares! (not meant to derail the drooling over the new Doc, of course)
Title: Re: 'Doc on the way
Post by: picture_of_nectar on October 08, 2010, 12:57:08 PM
Yeah sorry I don't know more about it. I'd ask him, but I know Paul is very protective of his ideas and probably wouldn't appreciate me revealing it on the web anyway. Sorry.

Oh, I'm definitely not asking for specifics or for to you inquire...no worries. More just thinking out loud (or type) about what it could be...which somehow became a long-winded (and potentially boring for all of you) description of the rivoting world of guitar neck reinforcement.

As you were, gentlemen.

which somehow became a long-winded (and potentially boring for all of you) description of the rivoting world of guitar neck reinforcement.

Not at all! Keep ramblin. Very interesting.

Yeah totally Andrew. Interesting stuff. Thanks.

Also I should mention Paul told me he will share ideas amongst trusted luthiers, so maybe email him...

I know I'm late on this but that is one bad axe you have.  I would have to take a month off work and sit and play it 12 hrs a day.  Very nice piece man.

Doesn't seem to be a lot of chatter here in the Guitar section...

PON, I'd love to know how things are going with the Doc after these last few weeks. How's it settling in? I imagine that it just keeps getting better and better as you play it in.

You're right Andrew, very little chatter here...come to think of it, weren't you supposed to treat us all to an AO thread?  That would certainly spark some discussion.

And I second the follow up 'Doc review.

I freakin love it! The rest of my collection has been totally neglected.

It's rediculously responsive to pick attack. Can do some fun things with feedback, or dial it out really easily. I have to run my compressor really low or she wants to howl like a wolf.

The neck is really comfortable. Action is a bit high, kina plays like an acoustic. I was able to lower it without getting any fret buzz, but it seems some tone was sacrificed so I put it back up. I guess Paulknows what he's doing...

Basically it sounds as good as it looks....or better. It cuts through our bands mix really well. Can get lots of different tones out of it. One of my favorite toggle possitions is the dropped coil in parralel. Has a really cool quacky strat tone.

Once we get a good recording from band practice I'll post it up. Fair warning tho I am pretty much a rookie player. We are thinking about throwing our first gig soon. Getting really psyched about music opportunities these days!

Thanks for checkin in y'all. I can say if you can spring for a Doc, do it and don't look back. Really happy with the G4.

Here is some eye candy:

LOL...as expected, of course.

Great review though, very happy you're psyched with it (again, as expected).  Can't wait to hear some audio.

Nice, PON...that's what we all expected, but I figured I should check in to get the good word directly.

And Patrick, thanks for reminding me...I'm finishing up a special project right now, so maybe this is a perfect time to start the AO thread.
