Any opinions on these amps? I'm trying to find one with a little more headroom than my Vintage Sound 22.
1. Carol Ann OD2
2. Bogner Shiva 6L6
3. Mesa Boogie Mark III purple or red stripe
I want head only - I'll be playing through a Hard Truckers 2x12 w Celestion V30's.
Looking for 45-60 watts really.
Thanks!
I had a Carol Ann OD2 EL34s, OD2r ( 6V6s), and a Triptik
Badass anps. Highly recomended.
Don't know the Carol Ann amps, not much of a fan of the Shivas, though the 20th anniversary model seemed a little better. Mesa Mark III's are of course fantastic and highly regarded around these parts... lol
I recommend the Mesa (either stripe model) just because.. and you will absolutely have enough headroom with one.
Thanks guys - which carol Ann did you like best nectar? I'm worried about the mesa becasue I had a Red Stripe head and I always, always, found myself tweaking it while playing (too many knobs/options) that's one reason I got the Vintage 22 - pretty straightforward!
The carol Ann's are amazing. I loved the od2. In my mind those are some good options, but I'd put the bogner 4th among the ones you have or are considering.
I'm surprised the vintage doesn't have enough head room. What speaker? I have a blackface dr and it is almost too loud at 3, and pretty much clean (although it's had a lot of work done).
A really cool amp, built unbelievably well, and really special is the
FYD Amps twin reverb. It's unreal and top shelf quality.
I agree that boogie can be tough to set, but there are some really great settings out there you can just plug in and it will be as good as any amp you've ever heard. I just tried a few out, found some I like and then never changed it again and I love it.
I'm a recent purple stripe owner and I'm blown away by channel 1.
I'm running through a custom 2x12 with wgs
I have a purple stripe MKIII and the only knobs I ever tweak are the volume, depending on the room we're playing. I think you'll be very happy with it.
I may go for the Mesa for the price.
Right now I have Celestion G12M 25 watt greenbacks in my HT cab, so I'm wondering once I get the Vintage 30's next week that will give me what I'm looking for as far as headroom. My Vintage Sound is close, but at volume 3 it's clean, but not 100%.

The Triptik had the most balls and the most variety in tones with 3 gain channels. Had an effects loop which was cool. The High gain setting was damn mean.
However my favorite was the OD2r, at 25w it was the perfect power for most of the bars I played in. And the cleans were amazing, rivaled my BV Princeton, but with more headroom. The older ones didn't have an effects loop but took to pedals well out in front.
Only had the OD2 briefly but I preferred the OD2r's 6L6s, and didn't need the heavier gain channels for my style.
