Read through the forum, young grasshopper ;D. There are more than a few topics/conversations about the DM2000.
There are plenty of ways to use it, which, as Walker explains, have been explained in depth elsewhere on the board. However, in regards to your question: when does Trey use it (give me an example)? He only uses it to make one sound; a sound it was never meant to make. By his own admission (I can locate the article of you would like), there's some mixture of settings on the device that just makes it freak out and produce a bunch of hyper modulation noise. You can hear it at the end of some songs/jams when everyone in the band suddenly joins in a crescendo of loud dissonance; in effect, to end with a bang, as it were (think, spastic drum rolls right before the chord progression lands on a satisfying resolution to the I chord, or some other musically tenable resolution).
Listen to the beginning of almost any David Bowie from '94 (or almost any time after that for that matter) and you'll here it... Reminds me of screwing with the time knob on an analog delay.
Check out the august 2000 interview with Trey in guitar player magazine. He describes how he uses the dm2000 for most of his loops. He starts with the dm2000 and lets the loop volume decay until it sounds like a good level with the rest of the band, then he grabs it with the boomerang.
