Title: Reccomend some covers for my band?
Post by: Walker done done on April 11, 2011, 11:28:12 AM
Hey guys...

What are your favorite cover songs that if you were going out on the town you'd like to walk into a bar and hear a band playing?  I'm looking for some ideas for songs to add to our repetoire.  We've got a new keyboardist and are working him in now in prep for our summer shows and new songs will be added, so figured this would be a great place to fish for ideas.  Exclude Phish songs...we all know those.  But what about covers from other bands?  Thanks in advance!

Why not do originals?

How about Chank by Scofield MMW

Night Tripper by Dr. John

Anything by Gov't Mule.

Well, no Phish?  Okay here are some covers that come to mind:

Loving Cup-Rolling Stones
Roses Are Free-Ween
Frankenstien-Edgar Winter
Peaches en Regalia-Frank Zappa
Jesus Left Chicago--ZZ Top
Sneaking Sally Through the Alley--Robert Palmer
Ya Mar-The Mustangs
Rock and Roll-Runaways
Life on Mars-David Bowie
Cracklin' Rosie--Neil Diamond (sounds great right after a Hold Your Head Up Tease, or even Cold as Ice)
Crosseyed and Painless--Talking Heads

I dunno, just some of the top of my head.

Patrick likes the stay within the Phishy realm of cover material. I say go more theatrical...

Stonehenge by Spinal Tap.

Monie Monie Monie -

Aqua Lung

New keyboard guy? What? you guys already play the most diverse setlists ever, so keep doing what you do. If I had to recommend something I'd say jerry's keepers and benny and the jets.

LOVE the Finders Keepers suggestion, good call!  And yes new keyboardist, Kevin Roper. He smokes.  Peter moved on to work on a solo project.

Patrick - we already play most of those covers, but good suggestions.

Ooh La La - Faces

We have been doing some covers that we have had some fun with:

Showbiz Kids- Steely Dan
Night by Night- Steely Dan
Pretzel Logic- Steely Dan
Had To Cry Today- Blind Faith
Forever Man- Blind Faith
Six to Four- George Benson
Hypnotize- King Fish
21st century schizoid man- King Crimson
Stage Fright- The Band
Sip the Wine- Rick Danko
Moon Rocks- Talking Heads
Girlfriend is Better- talking heads
Out of control- rolling stones
saint of me- rolling sotnes

These are some of them, all take some time to go through and learn... Six to four is one of my favorites to play, took me a long time to learn to play the song like george

Couldn't Get it Right, by the Climax Blues Band.

Already do that one  ;D.  We like to pair it with other songs as the end Bm vamp can be jammed on for a while and offers a thick groove space to play in.  Known pairings for Couldn't Get It Right include Crosseyed & Painless and Down Under.

Got another for ya.  How about "I'm Bad" by LL Cool J.  There's really not much to it guitar wise; however the bass line is friggn hypnotic and funky as hell.  I know if I were seeing a band and they busted something like this out, I'd be pretty dam stoked.  my .02

Killer!  I'd love a copy of the mix when you tear the roof off the place with it.

It's pretty easy to play to.  Just Am, D for the most part.

Will do man.  Just wished I live in the same vicinity as you, so I'd be able to check out you band and jam sometime.  Always nice to find some like-minded individuals to hang with.
