Title: Missed you guys.. and a Mk III Q?
Post by: Helping Friendly on August 29, 2015, 09:44:07 PM
Hello everyone. I just wanted to let everyone know it feels good to be back on this site. I haven't been in about 8 months. I bought a house in January and haven't picked up my guitar since. My dog died on the day we closed on the new house (changed my profile pic to him  :) ) and I just haven't been inspired. I know that I left off feeling frustrated with amp settings on my Purple Mk 3. I've just been avoiding playing because of the stress I remember in my tone. I remember thinking there is no way Trey has a Simul-class because I could not get his smooth lead tone with mine. I tried all the mods and tube rolling. BUT I'm ready to start back up and I am feeling inspired again. I think going to shows this summer helped me alot.

So I guess since I brought this up I will ask you guys:
Have any of you had experience with a 60/100 and a Simul-class? Find any differences worth noteing? I find it hard to believe Trey uses the half power switch on a simul. (As I stated on a different thread a minute ago)

I'm tring to catch up on all the posts I missed in the past months. I have another really "big" reason I'm getting inspired again in playing and being back on the forum, which I will post about when I pick it up Friday... stay tuned for some guitar porn. Lol

Have you tried 6L6's in the outer spots (where the EL34's should go) in Class A?

Just curious - I haven't. Trey has 6L6's throughout his amp. But I agree, Class A with EL34's does not do the trick.

You've done all the mods - does that include a Pentode/Triode switch?

I just use SimulClass with the MV around 2.

Hey heady! Yes I have tried 4 6l6's. That's what I have in the amp now. Class a with all 6l6 just doesn't do it 4 me. I traded my winged c el34's  so I could run all winged c 6l6's and now I want to go back to the mix. I remember getting more harmonics with the mix. You know that "chirp" trey gets when he palm mutes some rhythm? I feel I get that chirp more with the mix. I love that harmonic chirp. I get close to it, but not as good as him. The adamas pick helps. This is another reason why I don't think he uses a simul. And I know everyone says he uses all 6l6's, but can anyone really prove that's true? If it is, I bet he uses a 60/100. I wish I knew what amp he really uses and what tubes!

Yes I have the triode/Pentode mod done on my Purple stripe. As well as the bias mod. And I played with all the other mods. Red stripe mod is only different on the lead channel. I can't get his tone 100%. I keep telling myself it's because he uses a doc. I got an archtop coming Friday so I'll see if that really is the missing link.

I know that you mean about the "chirp." When setting your amp's tone at home, you loose that chirp if you dial in a smoother tone, but if you dial the treble back in, it sounds a bit harsh. However, I think the latter, brighter, tone sounds more correct in a band mix.

There are pics of his amp showing 4 6L6 tubes.

I have two hollowbodies that sounds pretty different. I'm sure the Doc is also different.

Nice shot. I'm at the beach right now so it's really hard to see the tubes. I'll look when I get home. I know that winged c el34's and 6l6's are really close in size where from a distance it could be mistaken for all 6l6's. Has anyone ever found out what brand tube he uses? Sorry this thread is becoming a "treys gear" thread. Lol

Edit: I just got home for a better look. That's hard to tell what is in there? Anyone ever come across a better shot?
