If i played in a band with a bass player the Bass on my amp would be completely off. He indeed sounded way bass heavy. Aren't 6L6's and EL34's pretty bass heavy tubes?

Since this thread is still going I have to say with peace and love that I hated his tone at MSG this year. Too much bass! Way too much imo. Is Trey going def?? At many points it sounded like a 2 bass band. Not a fan. I love Trey and phish more than anything but I hope that Komet tone never comes back. Maybe the bass knob was just up too high for me? Not to be nitpicky, but Trey was arrested 15 December 2006. He played five times later the same month; three times in 2007; fourteen times in 2008. Rothbury was by far from his first gig since being busted in Whitehall. But, yes, Trey sounds like Trey on a strat, tele, jag, SG, and whatever else he picks up

Good point hoody. Those Komet amps seem pretty strait forward. They sound good from what I've heard on YouTube. In the mix I'm sure Trey will sound like Trey. It will be fun to hear any different subtleties tonight. I'll be in section 200's. Holla at me!

I haven't been here in a while, so sorry if I sound like a stranger....

But to your point, I heard him play in 2009 with a strat and he still sounded like Trey, it was stupid fun.  It was at the first Rothbury, Phish wasn't together and it was his first show since the arrest.  He got on stage with Mike Gordon's band.  Then Fishman joined.  Party.

great amp.  I almost tried not to love mine, but I couldn't.  I have '66 blackface DR, Mark III, Bandmaster, Silver twin, and others.  But the express really is one I love.

mine has a V30 in it.  When you get it warmed up it can really produce some amazing sounds. 

I primarily use the blues channel.  Vol up a good bit.  Then have the inverted V, but only use it really for a clean boost. 

It has a lovely tone on 5 watts, too. 

Only problems are that it does get some buzz (slightly).  and I have had experiences where one day its the best sound I've ever heard out of an amp, and the next I can't seem to get it.  Think its just a warming up the amp issue

Curious if anyone has any experience with the Mesa Express Series 5:50+ (plus). Or 5:25.

I used to own one of these (the non plus) years back, but it is long gone, and i owned many amp since. Blackface, Vintage, Vox, modern Fender, Swart, etc.

I have come full circle again, and picked up a used Express 5:50 Plus Model, with MC-90 Blackshadow speaker. All stock and great condition. Still under warranty which is a bonus.

Curious if any has had any experience with these, what the thoughts were, and if they had any tips and tricks on setting the tone and using using different modes or EQ shaping.

Again, i think this is a great amp and can cover a lot of ground. Very versatile for the different wattage selections as well 5/25/50. The 50 isn't really louder, just more headroom, and you can hear the difference for sure at low and high volume situations. I play mainly with a strat and it can get some nice blackface'ish tones as well as more modern mesa cleans, and some great blues.

I think the speaker is a great fit for this amp. I'm sure i could experiment, but i have a feeling Mesa selected this for some good reasons. I might try something might provide some tighter bass response, but for now it's going to stay stock.

Luthier is based in St George Utah. He basically made a brass version of the equator one...Similar to Roberts but higher in quality. My builder made the piece mate with the bottom plate for optimal transfer of energy. I would be happy to pass him along. PM me and I can help yall out. I looked into Roberts', and his seemed hastily built and varying in quality. It seems as though you need tall brass, to allow for greater clearance on the strings to the tail piece.

I had one of these guitars....and all though they are not complete shit....that are misleading to say the least. Robert is an excellent self promoter and is not afraid of blog posting. I would suggest his guitars retail for $750. A fair price considering the build. Their is inconsistency in builds, and they are chinese made. The tone is decent....but that was with real sh1 59's i had to replace. Put those pickups on anything and it will sound good.
