Wah Review

Hey guys,

A short time ago the ever-awsome SourD let me try 8 of his wah peddals out, and the results are below. SourD - perhaps you can elaborate on these pedals below if folks are looking for more of a description?

I made no internal adjustments to any of the pedals - played them as they were. Bearing that in mind, here's the order of how I'd rate them:

1. Thomas Organ (70's era?)
2. 90's-era Dunlop
3. Vox 846
4. 80's-era Dunlop
5. RMC (gray)
6. RMC (blue)
7. Area 51
8. Whipple

Interesting results. I would have thought the 90's Dunlop would have been the worst with RMC and Area 51 higher. I'm guessing the RMC blue is a 3 and gray the Picture wah?

Is the Vox you tried the one they currently produce?

The thomas organ has a tdk inductor. The 90's has a red fasel and hot potz. The blue rmc is the joe walsh and the grey is an early rmc3. I like that he picked the cheaper wahs as his top 4. That is a good example of picking your tone with your ears and not your wallet. The vox is an 846 not the more recent 847.

Just bought a vintage Thomas Organ in mint condition that I'm pretty stoked to get.

I started fiddling with my RMC3 settings and haven't found one I liked since.

Do you guys think a true bypassswitch is necessary in the old Thomas Organ wahs?

I think that is up to you and your ears. Play for a while with it out of the signal path then put it back in and see if you notice a difference. You could use your bypass loop pedal to test it out too. The '74 that walker tested does not have true bypass installed.
