It can push a 4x12. If the deluxe is pushing an 8ohm speaker and the 4x12 cab is 8ohm then the power will be split equal (50/50) between the cab and the combo's speaker.

A DR can push a 4x12 cab without any problems.  Marshall 50 watt Jmp50's were paired with 8x12 full stacks all the time. Just make sure you are mindful of the impediance, as to match that of the output tranny on the amp, and you are all good.

The standard OT likes to see 8 Ω. As such, you should have a 4x12 cab of 8 Ω speakers wired series/parallel for a total of 8 Ω.  I would leave the cab speaker unplugged when you are using the 4x12.  The ext jack runs inline with the speaker jack, and you could fuck up your OT. -It would get drowned out anyway.

I have a 65 DR that is pretty sweet, and a 71 that I replaced the PT and OT with Mercury Mag units, mostly to lower the voltage so I could run a 5a4R/GZ34 instead of the 5U4B Rectifier. When I did all that b.s., I bought a O.T. with multiple taps so I could do some speaker experimenting without having a meltdown...

DR's are fun amps. I got my 65 about 11 or 12 years ago from a guy who had it in his attic from when his dad had passed on. I got it for $200. I bought the 71 all beat up without a speaker about 6 years ago for 400. I like the 71 alot because I can frankenstein the fuck out of it and never feel bad, it is way better than I got it.

This is my first post on this site, I have followed it around for a while now.

Poster I remember you from the rhombus don't I? I was on there for years.

I'll build you one after I finish mine (nearly done, I swear, I've got the photos to prove it!).

That SMS pre-amp is a great idea. Hard to believe it hadn't been done before.

I have had an old AA763 BFSR chassis and ripped up empty cabinet I got like 10 or so years ago from a guy for $50.
I ended up just making a dovetail pine cab for it, fix some wiring, and used it as a head, and then more as a pre-amp.

depending on what poweramp, rectifier, and speaker configuration you use; for the most part, you can have a super reverb, deluxe, twin, vibroverb, showman,etc...

Are the SMS pre's on a tag or turret board, so as to be 'moddable'?  Also, the pre-amp on a BF Deluxe Reverb runs at a lower voltage than on the Super or Twin, giving a bit 'browner' sound. -Any way to adjust that?

Sorry if these are dumb questions, I just saw the SMS when you all talked about it, and don't know much more than I am reading on there. Thanks!

What year is it? What speaker, tubes, condition, etc..?
