how do i go about finding out what scale pattern trey uses and over what chords? i'm still learning how to solo and i still need to work on it a lot but this is a simpleish song that i think i might be able to play someshit with if i could figure out kind of what trey is doing.

i think you should look the song up for some assistence and learn the chords and how the song goes.  then once you get the tune down figuring out the key will be reletively easy.  this is a great way to learn how to solo.. he is most likey just playing major scale patters in varios modes.. so try to find the key and try your own thing.. mixolydian is a good fit usually...some pentatonic might work too but more so major.. the notes are in there...

as far as variation that is another thing that has to come to you.. try out varios barrer chords etc..
