it looks like trey was using his dr on the tonight show.... I thought it sounded good

It sounded okay imo, must not have had time to dial in.. Sounded a bit harsh like when he used the DR last minute on 8/28/12.

I think it has to do with the volume levels being so much lower in these tiny venues. I heard the same thing in this recording when they played the Ed Sullivan Theater.

The whole band sounds much flatter and smaller.  Probably due to the lack of natural resonance and reverb that you get in a amphitheater or any large venue. 

Also, I didn't see a compressor, which I also think contributes to the tube screamers sounding grittier and more hollow.
